Present Perfect vs Past Simple
Use the present perfect for experiences or states connected to now (unfinished time: this week, ever/never, since/for). Use the past simple for finished time with a specific past reference (yesterday, in 2020, last year).
Examples
- I have visited Rome twice. (experience/unfinished time)
- I went to Rome in 2019. (finished time, specific past)
- She has lived here since 2018. (state up to now)
- They left an hour ago. (completed past event)
- Have you ever tried surfing? (ever/never)
