Discourse markers (advanced)
Discourse markers are words and phrases that organize and connect ideas in speech and writing. At an advanced level, you will use nuanced connectors for contrast (however, nevertheless), concession (although, even though), result (thus, therefore, consequently), addition (moreover, furthermore), and sequencing (firstly, subsequently, finally).
Examples
- He was unwell; nevertheless, he attended the meeting.
- It was raining. Even so, they went ahead with the event.
- The plan was poorly designed; consequently, it failed.
- Her idea is innovative and, moreover, practical.
- Firstly, gather data; subsequently, analyse the results.
