Choose the correct preposition: in, on, or at
Les prépositions de lieu : in, on, at
Le trio du lieu suit une logique de zoom : in pour les volumes et espaces fermés (in the box, in Paris, in the kitchen), on pour les surfaces et lignes (on the table, on the wall, on the coast), at pour les points précis (at the door, at the bus stop, at the airport).
Le français « à » couvre les trois, d'où la confusion permanente : « at Paris » (in Paris — c'est un volume), « in the bus stop » (at — c'est un point). Les cas institutionnels se mémorisent par paires : at school / at work / at home (le lieu comme fonction) mais in the school (le bâtiment physique) ; in bed mais at the table. Les transports ont leur règle propre : in a car/taxi (on s'y glisse) mais on a bus/train/plane/bike (on y monte). Les pièges fins : on the street (US) / in the street (UK), at the corner / on the corner (les deux existent), in the picture (et non « on »), on the left/right. N'oubliez pas les voisins : under, behind, between, next to, opposite, above/over. Astuce : visualisez la géométrie — volume (in), surface (on), point sur une carte (at).
