💡 Rappel : "Much" = indénombrables / "Many" = dénombrables
Much et many : quantifier selon le régime
Many accompagne les dénombrables pluriels (many students, too many meetings), much les indénombrables (much noise, so much work). Leurs questions sont des outils quotidiens : How many people? (combien de personnes), How much does it cost? (combien ça coûte — l'argent est indénombrable).
La confusion much/many trahit immédiatement le régime mal identifié : « much people », « many money » inversent les attributions — people est un pluriel dénombrable (many people), money un indénombrable (much money). Les invités surprise : time (much time — indénombrable, sauf « fois » : many times), work (much work), advice, information — tous much, contre l'intuition française. Deuxième subtilité : en affirmation simple, l'anglais courant délaisse much/many pour a lot of — I have a lot of friends sonne naturel là où I have many friends fait écrit ; much affirmatif nu (I have much work) est même quasi fautif à l'oral. Much et many s'épanouissent avec how, too, so, as et dans les négations : too much sugar, so many options, not much time. Astuce : la question How much is it? s'applique à tout prix, car c'est money qu'on interroge. L'exercice enchaîne les arbitrages et les structures too/so/how.
