Le subjonctif anglais apparaît surtout dans des tournures formelles ou figées: après verbes d’exigence/nécessité (insist, demand, suggest, recommend, require), des adjectifs exprimant l’importance (essential, important, crucial) et dans la tournure hypothétique If I were….
La forme subjonctive utilise souvent la base verbale sans -s à la 3e personne et be (au lieu de am/is/are), ainsi que des passifs en be + participe passé (ex.: be approved, be submitted).
- Après verbes d’exigence: « They insisted that he leave. »
- Après adjectifs d’importance: « It is essential that she be on time. »
- Hypothétique irréel: « If I were you, … »
