Qu'est-ce que l'inversion ?
L'inversion est une forme emphatique ou stylistique où l'on inverse l'ordre normal sujet-verbe. Elle donne une tonalité plus formelle et élégante au discours.
Normal : I have never seen such chaos.
Inversion : Never have I seen such chaos.
Types d'inversion
Avec les adverbes négatifs
Never, rarely, seldom, hardly, scarcely, barely, little...
• Never have I seen such beauty.
• Rarely does she complain.
• Hardly had we arrived when it started raining.
Avec "No sooner... than"
Exprime une succession immédiate d'événements
• No sooner had he arrived than the show started.
• No sooner had I finished than the phone rang.
Avec "Only"
Pour mettre l'accent sur une restriction
• Only then did I understand.
• Only after midnight does the fun begin.
• Only by working hard can you succeed.
Avec "So" et "Neither"
Pour exprimer l'accord ou la similarité
• So do I. (Moi aussi)
• Neither can she. (Elle non plus)
