💡 Astuce : "Put up with" exprime souvent une tolérance réticente ou forcée.

Notes d’usage

Séparable ou inséparable ? Inséparable, préposition figée : I can’t put up with this noise. Les trois mots restent soudés.

Registre : neutre à familier. À l’écrit soigné, on préférera tolerate ou endure.

Piège pour les francophones : le faux ami classique : support ne veut PAS dire « supporter/tolérer ». Support = soutenir, appuyer. Pour « supporter » au sens de tolérer, c’est put up with, tolerate ou stand.

À ne pas confondre avec : tolerate (plus formel), endure (endurer, connotation de souffrance), bear (souvent au négatif : I can’t bear it), stand (idem).
