Notes d’usage
Séparable ou inséparable ? Séparable au transitif : calm him down / calm the crowd down. Inséparable à l’intransitif : calm down!
Registre : neutre à familier. À l’impératif nu (Calm down!), la formule peut sonner sèche — préférez try to calm down pour adoucir.
Piège pour les francophones : le francophone dit spontanément ×calm yourself par calque de « calme-toi ». L’anglais idiomatique est calm down, sans réflexif.
À ne pas confondre avec : cool off (redescendre après un coup de sang), chill out (familier, se détendre), settle down (se poser, cesser l’agitation).
