There is, there are : signaler l'existence

Pour dire qu'une chose existe ou se trouve quelque part, l'anglais emploie there is (singulier et indénombrables : There is a problem, There is some milk) et there are (pluriel : There are three options). Le there ne désigne pas un lieu : il annonce simplement l'existence — c'est le « il y a » français.

Justement : « il y a » étant invariable, les francophones figent there is partout — « there is many people » est la faute emblématique ; l'accord se fait avec ce qui suit : There are many people. À l'oral, l'accord se joue sur le premier élément d'une liste : There's a sofa and two chairs. Ne confondez pas non plus there is avec it is : there introduit l'existence (There's a meeting at 3 — il y en a une), it identifie (It's an important meeting — elle est importante) ; le calque « it has a problem » pour « il y a un problème » est à proscrire. Le système se décline à tous les temps : there was/were, there has been, there will be — et en question : Is there…? Are there…? avec réponses courtes Yes, there is / No, there aren't.
