Tag Questions Exercise
Choose the correct question tag
Tag questions : consolidation et intonation
Cette deuxième série pousse les tags vers la maîtrise : temps composés (You've finished, haven't you?), modaux (She can drive, can't she?), there (There's a problem, isn't there?) — et la dimension orale : l'intonation montante demande vraiment, la descendante cherche juste l'assentiment.
Les temps composés concentrent les hésitations : le tag reprend le PREMIER auxiliaire — You would have called, wouldn't you?, They've been waiting, haven't they? — et jamais le verbe principal (« haven't they waited? » n'est pas un tag). Le cas there garde there dans le tag : There were many people, weren't there? (et non « weren't they »). Used to prend did : You used to smoke, didn't you? Les phrases avec never, hardly, rarely comptent comme négatives → tag positif : You never listen, do you? Côté sens, cette série travaille la fonction sociale du tag : adoucir une critique (That wasn't very clever, was it?), engager la conversation (Nice day, isn't it?), vérifier une information avant une réunion (The report's ready, isn't it?). Les réponses suivent la logique anglaise : Yes = c'est vrai, No = c'est faux — sans l'ambiguïté du « si » français. Astuce : repérez le premier auxiliaire, neutralisez les faux positifs (never, hardly), gardez there. La série mélange tous ces cas.
