Choose the correct superlative form
Le superlatif : the tallest, the most expensive
Le superlatif désigne l'extrême d'un groupe : adjectifs courts en the + -est (the tallest building), longs en the most (the most expensive hotel). Le the est partie intégrante de la structure, et le groupe de référence s'introduit par in (in the world, in my class) ou of (of all).
Les mêmes lignes de faille que le comparatif — « the most tall », « the expensivest » — plus deux pièges propres. Le the oublié d'abord : « she is tallest » est incomplet, le superlatif anglais exige son article (le français « la plus grande » vous y aide). La préposition ensuite : le français « de » pousse vers of (« the best of the world »), mais l'anglais dit in pour un lieu ou un groupe : the best restaurant in town, the youngest in the family — of se réserve à of all et aux périodes (the hottest day of the year). Irréguliers : the best, the worst, the furthest. Le superlatif s'allie volontiers au present perfect avec ever : It's the best film I've ever seen — structure à automatiser telle quelle. Distinguez enfin most superlatif (the most beautiful) de most = « la plupart » (most people). Astuce : the + forme + in/of — trois pièces, trois vérifications. L'exercice insiste sur l'article et la préposition.
