May vs Might vs Must — Exercice 2
Ces trois modaux expriment des degrés de probabilité différents. Must indique une quasi-certitude (he must be tired = j'en suis presque sûr). May exprime une possibilité réelle (it may rain = c'est possible). Might marque une possibilité plus faible ou plus hypothétique (he might come = peut-être). May et might servent aussi à demander ou accorder la permission, dans un registre formel. À la forme négative, must not exprime l'interdiction tandis que may not / might not signifient simplement « il est possible que ne… pas ». Cet exercice vous entraîne à doser le degré de certitude selon le contexte.
