Comparatives and Superlatives Exercise
Choose the correct comparative or superlative form
Le comparatif : taller, more expensive
L'anglais fabrique son comparatif selon la longueur de l'adjectif : courts (1 syllabe) + -er (taller, faster), longs (2 syllabes et plus) avec more (more expensive, more interesting). Le second terme s'introduit par than : She's taller than me.
La frontière courte/longue génère les fautes types : « more tall », « expensiver » — et son cumul « more taller » qui double la marque. Les adjectifs en -y de deux syllabes basculent côté court : happy → happier, easy → easier. Orthographe des courts : doublement de la consonne après voyelle brève (big → bigger, hot → hotter), -e final simple à compléter (nice → nicer). Les irréguliers se récitent : good → better, bad → worse, far → further. Le than est l'autre point chaud : les francophones écrivent « that » ou « as » par contamination — le comparatif exige than, et l'égalité se dit as…as (as tall as), structure distincte. Pour atténuer ou amplifier : a bit taller, much more expensive (jamais « very more »). Astuce : comptez les syllabes, vérifiez le -y, et verrouillez than.
